Start Your Commute Program

Building up an employee commuter program is a great way to support your employees and show that you are invested in their productivity and well-being.

A typical commute program includes a range of incentives and support to encourage alternative modes of travel (for example, transit, carpool, walking, or cycling). Approaches will vary depending on the size of your company, scheduling needs, and where employees live.

Get started with these tips:

  1. Identify your employees’ needs. Survey your employees to understand their current commute patterns and what would encourage them to choose alternative modes of transportation. Here’s a downloadable example from our friends at Spare the Air.
  2. Get management support. It’s important to have the backing of senior management in order to implement a successful commute program. Check out this helpful guide.
  3. Offer a variety of incentives and support. This could include things like subsidized transit passes, vanpool subsidies, telecommuting options, and flexible work hours. More on this below!
  4. Promote your program. Make sure your employees know about the program and its benefits. Here are some tips.

Create Options for Employees

Empower and support sustainable commute modes with the following information:

  • Remote and hybrid work – Create a supportive and productive work environment for all employees, regardless of where they work. Check out our Resource Kit for tips on remote work policies and procedures.
  • Flexible work hours – Flexible schedules can help employees be more productive, engaged, and happier. Give more flexibility and control with our helpful guide to flexible work arrangements.
  • Walking and biking – Encourage an active commute by sharing this flyer on biking and walking tips (English/Spanish). And remember, employees need a safe location to store their bikes!
  • Transit – Transit is one of the best ways to get around Marin County, and it’s good for the environment too. Help your employees go green by purchasing group Clipper cards.
  • Vanpooling – Vanpools are an excellent solution for employees with longer commutes. Spread the word about our $3,600 vanpool incentive and read this guide for suggestions on vanpool vendors and other helpful tips.
  • Carpooling – Carpools are a great way to reduce traffic congestion and save money on gas. Encourage your employees to form carpools by sharing this handy guide.

We’re Riding Smart!

Russell A. Colombo
Former President & CEO, Bank of Marin
As a major North Bay employer with offices across Marin and Sonoma counties, we are focused on commute alternatives for our employees, many of whom make the laborious commute on Hwy 101 every day. With the high cost of living in Marin, we rely heavily on hiring from Sonoma County.

We are committed to making SMART an integral part of improving that commute by offering a morning shuttle from the Hamilton Station to our Novato headquarters using a vehicle that Bank of Marin purchased with this purpose in mind We also offer an Uber Rideshare program for the afternoon commute to Hamilton and $50/month reimbursement to those employees that purchase a SMART monthly pass.

Additionally, Bank of Marin has representatives that chair the Oversight committees for both SMART and TAM Measure A funds. We hope our commitment inspires other major employers in Marin to help ease congestion by encouraging their employees to use SMART.
